The IFEA Europe conference, held as an associated event on September 8-10, will attract festival organisers, city cultural workers, industry suppliers, students of event management, and others. Debates, panel discussions, workshops, walk-n'talks will focus on best practices in the industry. The conference features around 20 high profile guest speakers and workshop facilitators, and provides an excellent opportunity for researchers to meet industry practitioners in sessions as well as during the social programmes, which include a harbour cruise and a series of programmes related to the My World IMAGES Festival which will fill Copenhagen streets and venues between September 6 - 12.

The preliminary conference programme is online. Go to www.ifeaeurope.com/events/copenhagen2010.

For the IFEA Europe conference, IFEA Europe kindly offers a substantial discount on the registration fee for "Journeys of Expression" delegates. The offer is only available on this site. The discounted IFEA Europe conference fee covers the an opening eventSeptember 8, and full conference participation including lunches and refreshments on September 9 and 10.

The IFEA Europe conference ends with a special My World IMAGES Festival event in the evening of September 10. This event also constitutes the opening of the "Journeys of Expression" Conference.

The fees do NOT cover dinners, nor does it cover participation in ticketed social events.

SEPARATELY TICKETED EVENTS

Venue / festival experiences - evenings of September 9 and/or 11.

Copenhagen is a city with an active cultural life. Delegates may take advantage of one of the opportunities offered at the Royal Theatre, the Copenhagen Jazzhouse, or other venues, or participate in some of the events related to the My World IMAGES Festival. The evenings of Thursday September 9 (for IFEA Europe conference delegates) and Saturday September 11 (for Journeys of Expression delegates) are particularly suitable for such evening programmes.

The organisers will carefully select the events that we think may be of interest to delegates and post them on this site for separate registration. A notification will be sent to all registered delegates when these ticketed event options can be booked.

Hosted By

Leeds Metropolitan University and Copenhagen Business School in association with IFEA Europe

Building on the established collaboration between the Centre for Tourism and Cultural Change (CTCC) and the International Festivals and Events Association (IFEA), this conference will bring together international academic researchers in the field of tourism and festival studies with policy makers and practitioners in the festivals and cultural events sector. The CTCC and IFEA are delighted to be working in partnership with the Centre for Tourism and Culture Management, Copenhagen Business School in the organisation and hosting of this event which coincides with IFEA’s annual conference.

The conference will discuss the complex implications of the global economic downturn for the relationships between tourism, festivals and cultural events. We particularly welcome paper proposals that consider questions of how the balance between social, artistic and commercial aspects of festivals can be sustained during these challenging times and how festivals and cultural events and their attractiveness to tourists may contribute to addressing economic, social and environmental crises at local, regional, national and international levels. The conference will take place in Copenhagen, Denmark and will form the 8th edition of the ‘Journeys of Expression’ conferences organised by the CTCC with partners since 2002.

Conference Aims
Festivals and cultural events of all kinds are of enduring and growing interest to policy makers and practitioners in the arts, community development, regeneration and, tourism sectors. This interest and involvement gives rise to a number of critical questions concerning the relationships between these sectors in the development, management and evaluation of festivals and cultural events during times of economic downturn, social and environmental crises. The conference aims to share the latest research findings and debates in these areas of critical concern for researchers, policy makers and practitioners alike. Proposals for papers are welcome from researchers working across the social sciences and humanities in examining festival and tourism relationships in any international setting.
